Prime Minister claims Slovakia will support joint EU purchases of gas

Slovakia will support the proposal for joint European purchases of gas and other energy sources, Prime Minister Eduard Heger indicated after arriving for the second part of the two-day EU summit in Brussels, which is devoted to mitigating the consequences of the energy crisis. Heger noted that EU leaders have a number of proposals on the table to choose from. Slovakia, he said, will support the idea of joint purchases of gas and energy raw materials, a model that has worked well for joint purchases of COVID-19 vaccines and tests. The premier remarked that the EU can negotiate much better conditions by dealing with external suppliers of energy raw materials as a single united organisation.
On Wednesday, the day before the EU summit, the European Commission put forward a series of proposals to keep gas prices at an affordable level for European households and businesses. In addition to a common platform for gas purchases, the proposals call for European gas storage to be 80-percent full by November 1. Heger claimed Slovakia can meet this target. "The capacity of our tanks is large, and it's strategically important for us to have our tanks filled first because it will increase our security. We have the technology and the capabilities to do it," said Slovak Prime Minister.
