Slovakia is one of the EU countries lobbying for Ukraine to be granted EU accession candidate status as soon as possible, Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korčok stated after a session of the Government on Wednesday. He pointed out that being included among the candidate countries does not automatically guarantee Ukraine its EU membership, as there are no shortcuts through the accession process. "We believe that the first official step has to be taken, though. It might not yet have the support of the whole EU, but Slovakia will promote it," said Korčok adding that it is what Ukraine deserves at least from a moral standpoint.
