The EU's new sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine might also hit the energy sector, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok said at the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) session in Brussels on Monday.
Korcok stated that Russia undervalued EU member states' ability to unite in this crisis situation and act together. "We spoke about four packages of sanctions that have been adopted so far, and we concurred that if Russia continues in its action, the EU will definitely respond," said Korcok. In addition to that, Korcok said that the energy sector is being mentioned most in this context. "Today it's no longer about whether or not we should disconnect ourselves from Russian gas and oil supplies, but how to do so," he said. "We see a need to cut off these supplies, however, it's impossible to do it quickly, in a couple of weeks or months. And not at all in the case of Slovakia, which is completely dependent on Russian oil and 85 percent dependent on Russian gas supplies," explained Korcok.
