59 percent of people think that a Slovak scientist will win the Nobel Prize one day, according to a survey focused on the perception of science and scientists in Slovakia carried out by the 2muse agency for the Eset Science Award. Part of the scientific community shares the same opinion.
The survey showed that Slovaks might win the Nobel Prize for a discovery in the field of medicine (25 percent), technologies (11 percent) or physics (7 percent). Slovak scientists who were contacted for the purpose of the survey support this opinion. Eset Science Award laureate Jan Dusza of the Slovak Academy of Sciences' (SAV) Material Research Institute views international cooperation as a strong prerequisite. "I think that the biggest chance is for Slovak scientists working in top foreign institutes or scientists working in Slovakia in strong international cooperation and dealing with a current topic. However, Slovak science needs stronger support from the state budget if it is to have an international level in several areas," said Dusza.
