Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the Penal Code lowering punishments for possessing narcotic and psychotropic substances from cannabis plants for personal consumption. The upper limit of these sentences will be one year if the quantity possessed does not exceed the usual single-dose quantity more than three times. If it does, but no more than ten times, the upper sentence limit will be set at two years. Meanwhile, penalties for those who possess excessive amounts of cannabis for personal consumption, namely more than ten doses, will be also reduced. The original sentences of three to ten years should be reduced to three to seven years. In the case of recidivists, the sentences will range from five to ten years, instead of the current ten to fifteen years.
