A spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry Maria Zakharova declared on Monday that the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry "supports barbarians" who "laugh over the graves of fallen" soldiers. Zakharova commented in this way on the official Russian foreign ministry website about the Slovak ministry's reaction to the defacing of the Slavin World War 2 memorial in Bratislava with the colours of the Ukrainian flag. "The claim by the Slovak foreign ministry that Slovak citizens are exhorting Russia in this way to "end the senseless war" only encourages barbarians, who laugh over the graves of the fallen," stated Zakharova.
In early March, an unknown perpetrator damaged the Slavin war memorial in Bratislava by painting it with blue and yellow, the colours of Ukrainian flag.
In its statement, the Slovak foreign ministry reminded Russia´s Embassy that the Slovak Republic takes care of the graves and memorials of Russian soldiers and all those who participated in liberating our country during World War II in an exemplary manner and with the highest respect. The Ministry also asked the Russian embassy to see reality. "And that is the enormous civic solidarity with Ukraine, senselessly attacked by the Russian Federation, which, aside from violating international law, also tramples the legacy of Ukrainians who had fought side-to-side with the Russians for freedom in 1945," stated the Slovak ministry press department.
