A prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor's Office has concluded a plea bargain with two former police officers in the Purgatory case. The deal still has to be approved by the Specialised Criminal Court in order to become valid. The office explained that the charges pressed against the duo concern several crimes, namely serving a criminal group, accepting bribes and misusing powers.
In 2020, the National Crime Agency (NAKA) detained a number of ex-police officers, including former police chief Tibor Gašpar over suspicions that they had operated as an organised criminal group centered around Nitra-based entrepreneur Norbert Bödör, who has family ties to Gašpar. In late 2021, the Special Prosecutor's Office indicted a total of 11 individuals in the case. Charges have been pressed against 21 people in total.
