Justice Ministry: Information in report on Chovanec's death untrue

The information included in the final expert report on the death of Slovak national Jozef Chovanec following his detention in a cell at Charleroi airport in Belgium is not true, the Justice Ministry claimed on Thursday. The ministry added that the investigation into the death of the Slovak citizen is not yet over.

On Wednesday (March 9), Belgian news website RTL.be reported that according to the expert report, Chovanec caused his own death in February 2018 by banging his head against the wall. "The experts invited by a legal representative of Slovakia disagree with the content and conclusions of the report and furthermore strongly disagree with the statement that the report was drafted after consultations with all medical experts involved," stated the Justice Ministry press department. According to the ministry, the report fails to reflect on stances by experts of the aggrieved party and the conclusions of the case reconstruction.

Slovakia's legal representative plans to contact Belgium's Prosecutor-General with a request to launch criminal prosecution over the incident. If Belgium's Prosecutor-General's Office will not take action, Slovakia's legal representative will file a criminal complaint instead.
