A prosecutor from the Prosecutor-General's Office on Tuesday launched criminal proceedings over war crimes in Ukraine, aiming to document evidence, especially from war refugees who might have been direct witnesses to or victims of conduct caused by the Russian aggression in Ukraine. According to Prosecutor General Maros Zilinka, the Slovak Prosecutor-General's Office is acting in close cooperation with the Ukrainian Prosecutor-General's Office and Eurojust, which is coordinating the collection of information and procedures of criminal prosecutions in individual countries. The prosecution in this case concerns crimes of inhumanity, the use of a prohibited means of warfare and unlawful conduct of hostilities, and wartime lawlessness. The Slovak Republic, along with Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Germany, has thus become the latest EU country to join the prosecution of crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed in connection with the military aggression of the armed forces of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.
