The city of Kosice is beginning to face a humanitarian catastrophe over the inpouring of refugees from war-torn Ukraine, Kosice mayor Jaroslav Polacek declared on Tuesday. According to Polacek, organisation on the side of the state is severely lacking, as there's no communication with or efficient support for regions and municipalities. "The city of Kosice is beginning to face a humanitarian catastrophe. Even though we do everything in our power, cooperating only with volunteers and without any state aid, we won't be able to take in more Ukrainian nationals, who are pouring in ever-increasing numbers into our city with each passing day," said Polacek.
In reaction to that, Interior Minister Roman Mikulec said that the statement by the Kosice mayor was an unacceptable example of sowing panic. "The most absurd thing about these theatrics, however, is that ZMOS [the Slovak Towns and Villages Association] and even the 'evil state that cares for no one' are only finding out about any of the city's problems for the first time from the media, not to mention the panic that [the mayor] has already spread among residents," Interior Minister Roman Mikulec (OLaNO) wrote in a status on Facebook on Wednesday.
