The Ministry of Education has published procedures and recommendations for schools to follow when enrolling pupils from Ukraine in classes. Information leaflets in both Slovak and Ukrainian will be available for parents from Ukraine, together with contacts for counselling.
Minister of Education Branislav Gröhling explained on Tuesday that upon arrival in Slovakia, Ukrainian parents have to apply for asylum or temporary shelter, then visit the school where they want to enrol their child and submit proof that the asylum or temporary shelter procedure has been initiated. Gröhling would advise parents to inform the school, for example, about the pupil's dietary needs or about the pupil's hobbies for extracurricular activities. The ministry advises schools to place pupils in the appropriate class according to their age, conditionally and with the provision of a language course. Moreover, Slovak teachers should start communicating with the pupils about the arrival of children from Ukraine, thus preparing them for the new situation. Children from Ukraine will be enrolled in Slovak schools with a certificate from a paediatrician.
