USA buys building in Bratislava, hasn't confirmed that embassy will move there

The USA has bought a building on the corner of Dostojevsky rad and Olejkarska Streets in Bratislava, according to data available in the Real Estate Land Registry and in an extract from the title deeds.

This locality close to Bratislava city centre has been mentioned over the past couple of years as a possible site to which the US Embassy might move from Hviezdoslav Square.

"As we are at the beginning of the search and planning process, I can't comment on any details at the moment," Tara Hall, spokesperson for the US Embassy in Slovakia, has told TASR. She said that the embassy has been cooperating with the city and local partners in seeking ways to modernise and expand the US Embassy in Bratislava.

A new location for the US Embassy in Bratislava became an issue mainly ahead of the local elections in 2018. Some Bratislava municipal politicians repeatedly criticised the embassy's location on Hviezdoslav Square in the city centre, mainly due to its security zone sealed off with a fence. They also initiated a petition calling for its removal.
