President Zuzana Caputova took to Twitter on Monday night to criticise the decision of her Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to recognise the self-proclaimed separatist Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic in Ukraine’s Donbas region as independent countries.
"Russia’s recognition of the so-called people's republics trashes years of efforts to resolve a conflict that Moscow has created. It's choosing confrontation over diplomacy and a blatant breach of international law and Ukraine's sovereignty," tweeted Caputova.
According to Prime Minister Eduard Heger, the Russia’s decision to recognise separatist republics only supports violence and hatred.
"Following the annexation of Crimea, Russia is continuing practices that lead neither to peace, nor to prosperity, and not even to good coexistence between Ukrainians and Russians," wrote Heger, adding that Russia’s recognition of the separatist republics will make ordinary people suffer.
In order to address the situation in Ukraine, Heger has convened a session of the Security Council on Tuesday.
