The American artist, photographer, film director and producer with Slovak roots Andy Warhol died on 22 February exactly 35 years ago.
Andy Warhol, originally Andrew Warhol, was born on 6 August 1928 into a Slovak-Rusyn family in Pittsburgh, USA, during the Great Depression.
From a young age, he was inclined towards fine art, graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology and moved to New York in 1949, where he lived the rest of his life.
Among Warhol's best known and most treasured works are the Coca-Cola paintings, the telephone, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, and Mickey Mouse. He was absolutely revolutionary in the field of advertising. In addition to paintings and original graphics, he was also involved in photography, music and film.
