On Monday, Slovakia remembers exactly four years since the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová, who were shot dead in their house in Veľká Mača, Trnava region on February 21st 2018. So far the shooter Miroslav Marček, his cousin and driver Tomáš Szabó and a go-between Zoltán Andruskó have been sentenced in the case. The court freed both Alena Zsuzsová, charged as go-between and entrepreneur Marian Kočner, charged of ordering the murder, however, the Supreme Court overturned their acquittal and returned the case to the court.
The murder of Kuciak and Kušnírová triggered the largest protests around the country since the Velvet revolution. Subsequently, the then PM Robert Fico, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, his successor Tomáš Drucker, police corps president Tibor Gašpar and other top police officers resigned from their posts.
