PM Robert Fico: VAT to stay at 20%

Prime Minister Robert Fico does not plan to reduce the rate of value added tax (VAT) from 20 percent to 19 percent. Fico claims lowering VAT would not bring a reduction of prices.

The tax increase has brought to the state budget around €200 million and the current government does not want to give up that revenue, Fico adds. The Finance Ministry is now considering the introduction of a tax on financial transactions, long discussed among EU member states. Slovakia is on the side of countries that are in favour of introducing such a tax, explains Slovak PM Fico.
