Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the State Citizenship Act according to which Slovak nationals who acquire the citizenship of a foreign country will not have to lose their Slovak citizenship if they prove that they have lived abroad for at least five years. Meanwhile, the same condition will apply for those who have already been deprived of their Slovak citizenship by acquiring the citizenship of another country and would like to reacquire it. In addition, those who have been deprived of their Slovak citizenship at their own request should reacquire it in line with the amendment, while at the same time it should be granted to anyone who has at least one Slovak parent, grandparent or great-grandparent. MPs also adopted an amendment concerning Slovaks living abroad who have applied for Slovak citizenship. Those who have made a significant contribution to the community of their compatriots and who are allowed to reside in Slovakia can obtain Slovak citizenship without having to live in the country for three continuous years.
