Road carriers have been on strike in Bratislava since Monday, to draw attention to problems bedevilling the sector. If the Government won't take any remedial action, the carriers are threatening also to block border crossings. The blockade is supposed to last four to five days. According to the protest organisers, road carriers are facing grave problems due to hikes in fuel prices. Thus they are demanding cuts in fuel prices similar to those seen in Poland and Hungary, as well as cuts to road tax, VAT refunds on fuels and lower toll payments. Minister of Transport Andrej Dolezal has already held talks with the road carriers, including in the presence of the Finance Ministry state secretary.
