Aid for people endangered by energy poverty discussed

President Zuzana Caputova met on Thursday with Labour Minister Milan Krajniak to discuss aid for households endangered by energy poverty on the heels of price hikes in energy and food. Caputova added that this concerns mostly single mothers, low income earners and pensioners living alone. She pointed out that only about 30,000 households receive the housing contributions today, even though experts estimate that almost every fifth Slovak household could find itself endangered by energy poverty. Krajniak assured the head of state that he pays full attention to the situation and is seeking ways to help this group of people.
Caputova proposed to change the system of existing housing contributions, so that it would aid not only the people on welfare but also those with incomes higher than the subsistence wage but facing energy poverty due to energy charge hikes. "It's this measure that was recommended to me by several economists back in the autumn and it's also included in recommendations tabled by the Finance Ministry's Financial Policy Institute," added Caputova.
