Luxembourg's ex-PM Jean-Claude Juncker will be the new president of the European Commission (EC), Prime Minister Róbert Fico said in Paris on Saturday. In Paris, Fico attended informal meeting of socialist and social-democratic Presidents and Prime Ministers of the EU countries, convened by French President Francois Hollande.
According to Fico, socialist and social-democratic political leaders agreed to recommend Juncker for the post of the EC chief. "I can confirm that with a probability that is close to one hundred percent, Mr. Juncker will be introduced at the European Council's session on Thursday-Friday next week as the new head of the European Commission," said Fico. Fico noted that he also discussed possible post for Maros Sefcovic who is Slovakia's official candidate for member of the EC. "Slovakia has a chance to get a significant economic portfolio in the European Commission, which would be a huge success of the Slovak diplomacy and foreign policy," added Fico.
