House defence committee recommends greenlighting Slovak-US DCA

The parliamentary defence committee on Monday recommended that MPs approve the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the USA and adopt a decision acknowledging that the document takes precedence over Slovak law. Parliament is expected to begin dealing with the document at the session starting on Tuesday. Meanwhile, more than 40 representatives of social, scientific and cultural life have called on MPs to reject the agreement, viewing it as disadvantageous and risky. In an open letter, they stated that Slovakia, unlike many other NATO countries, has a very bad historical experience with the stationing of foreign troops on its territory. Slovakia and the USA signed the Defence Cooperation Agreement in Washington late last week. The agreement is yet to be okayed by the Slovak Parliament and ratified by the Slovak president.
