Great danger of avalanche, the fourth degree of the five-part international scale, was declared on Tuesday in Mala Fatra and the Western Tatras. In the other mountains of Slovakia there is an increased danger of avalanche, the third degree. This according to Pavel Krajčí from the Avalanche Prevention Centre of the Mountain Rescue Service. Over the last three days of persistent snowfall, 20 to 50 centimetres of new snow fell on the mountains, most of it in the Western Tatras and Mala Fatra. Mountain rescuers recommend against any movement in the avalanche terrain of these two mountains. Significant snowfall combined with wind has created snow slabs and pillows. Krajčí pointed out that such formations can be loosened by only a small additional load and their stability is very difficult to assess.
