President Zuzana Caputova was scheduled to have a telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday to discuss the tense situation in Ukraine. Earlier this week, Caputova called for the provision of help to Ukraine because in this way "we would help ourselves and help peace". She added that Slovakia is currently in talks with Ukraine to inquire about what Kiev needs.
Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014 and has extended support to separatists in eastern Ukraine, has amassed more than 100,000 soldiers near the Ukrainian border, raising concerns in the West that Moscow might choose to attack its neighbour militarily. Russia denies this and claims that the tension is being increased by the Western powers and their deployment of military units to NATO's eastern flank.
