Prime Minister: Opposition dragging Slovakia back to 1998

The opposition is dragging Slovakia back to 1998, when the country was deciding on its place in Europe and the world, Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Wednesday, claiming that the opposition has been questioning Slovakia’s membership of both the EU and NATO, which are the only safe places for the country.

In this vein, the prime minister noted that NATO membership does not entail only receiving, but also giving and being aware of the power of an alliance, as well as being a good partner in all weather, not fair weather alone.

Heger stated that after the era of ex-premier Vladimir Meciar, Slovakia was said to have missed the bus in terms of EU integration. Such words did not sit well with Slovaks, said Heger. "I'm sure that any sovereign country wants to decide its own future. It is the right of a democratic country, and it is the right of its public," he said, adding that it is not right for Slovakia to want to decide for another democratic country, such as Ukraine, on these matters.

"When opposition leaders speak in this way at Ukraine's expense, I consider it to be very out of place and incorrect," said the prime minister.
