Thousands of households without electricity due to strong winds

On Sunday, more than 40,000 households and businesses in western Slovakia experienced power blackouts and 30,000 households in central Slovakia were left without electricity due to damage caused by extreme winds leading to extensive power outage. The scope of the blackout already classifies as an energy state of emergency. Moreover, as of Monday morning, firefighters across the entire of Slovakia had been called out a total of 210 times to deal with the consequences of the strong winds. The most serious situation was observed in the Trnava and Bratislava regions, where firefighters were called out 44 and 43 times, respectively. Next came the Nitra region, in which assistance was needed in 32 cases, the Trencin region (30), and the Banska Bystrica region (21). Professional as well as volunteer firefighters had their hands full, mainly removing toppled trees from roads and parked vehicles. In many cases, they also removed torn roofs from buildings and houses.
