Following the Government meeting on Wednesday, Justice Minister Maria Kolikova said that a legal analysis of mandatory vaccination will be published soon, adding that it's a theoretical document and once the Government decides to go father in this, it'll be necessary to carry out an updated analysis. According to the minister, the basic issue of the analysis was compliance with the Slovak Constitution and in which specific cases and whether it's possible to talk about specific groups of people given their particular vulnerability and age. She noted that the pandemic situation is changing and evolving, also with regard to the new omicron variant.
“I don't consider it to be appropriate or reasonable to push people into mandatory vaccination at a time of increasing strength of the omicron variant”, stated Health Minister Vladimir Lengvarsky following the Government meeting. The minister wants to wait for how the variant will behave among the infected and for the subsequent development. However, he added, that if necessary, he'll take over the mandatory vaccination “on his shoulders”.
Prior to the Wednesday Government session Prime Minister Eduard Heger said that according to a legal analysis of Justice and Health Ministries, mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 will be possible in Slovakia. Heger also underlined that mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 is a legitimate tool of the state to protect public health. According to the prime minister, the Cabinet discussed the options for introducing this measure and the option of restricting public health insurance payments for health care provided to individuals who voluntarily chose not to get vaccinated.
