According to the results of the 2021 census published by the Statistics Office on Thursday, the largest ethnic minority in Slovakia is the Hungarian one. The percentage of the population declaring membership of this group comes to 7.75. The second most numerous ethnic minority is the Roma on 1.23 percent, followed by the Czech minority (0.53 percent) and Rusyns (0.44 percent). The majority Slovak nationality makes up 83.8 percent of the population.
The results show that fewer inhabitants declared their Hungarian nationality than in 2011. According to the current census, 422,065 inhabitants declare their Hungarian nationality. Hungarian nationality as second was listed by 34,089 people. In the census ten years ago, 8.5 percent, or 458,467 people, declared themselves to be of Hungarian nationality.
According to MP Gyorgy Gyimesi (OLaNO), the census results showed that there is only one national identity. Prior to the census, he criticised the possibility of listing two nationalities. He thinks that the Hungarians are unfamiliar with the concept of double identity, and the census has resulted in a decline in people who declare themselves to be of Hungarian nationality.
