Census: More than 80 percent of Slovakia’s population stated Slovak as their native language

Slovak is the native language of almost 82 percent of the Slovak population, namely 4,456,102 people, according to the results of the 2021 census published by the Statistics Office on Thursday. Concerning other languages, 8.5 percent of the population stated Hungarian as their mother tongue, while 1.8 percent indicated the Romani language. Other languages accounted for less than 1 percent. From other statistics, more than half of the population of Slovakia (55.8 percent) is Roman Catholic. This is more than 3 million inhabitants. In terms of numbers, this is followed by the Evangelical denomination with 5.3 per cent (287,000) and the Greek Catholic with four per cent (218,000). The second largest group, however, is the group with no religious affiliation. Nearly 1.3 million residents, or 23.8 percent, reported being without a religious affiliation.
