On Monday morning, Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová, PM Eduard Heger and Speaker of Parliament Boris Kollár discussed the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the USA.
Kollár supports the agreement, however said that the arrival of each soldier and moving of nuclear weapon to Slovakia needs to be approved by the Slovak Parliament. According to opposition MP Robert Fico the agreement approved by the Government guarantees an absolute control over Slovakia's airspace to the USA, labelling it disadvantageous and useless. "23 countries have already signed this treaty, even all the ones on the EU’s eastern border including Hungary and Poland, so I think it is the right step also to strengthen our defence capabilities," said Heger.
DCA has been a subject of disagreements in Slovakia, being criticized by the opposition and even by the Prosecutor General. Last week, the Government approved the document. In order to come into force, it still needs to be approved by MPs in the Parliament.
