Slovakia is following developments in the current situation in Kazakhstan with great concern, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok (an SaS nominee) has reported. As he added, according to information available so far, no Slovaks living in the Central Asian country suffered any injuries during the unrest. Several Slovak priests and nuns have been working in Kazakhstan for a long time. The reports so far have not indicated that any of them have been harmed, however. “The situation in Kazakhstan needs to be de-escalated as quickly as possible, and the clashes resulting in casualties need to be brought to an end. Tensions in society cannot be ruled out, but the state must look for ways to deal with them democratically. Violence is not such a way, but dialogue with respect for the law and human rights is," reads Korcok’s statement.
The protests against high fuel prices - specifically of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) - in Kazakhstan erupted in the Mangystau region on January 2 and have gradually spread to several Kazakh cities.
