The Christian festival of Epiphany, or "Three Kings" (Traja krali), as it is known in Slovakia, was celebrated in this and many other countries on Thursday, January 6. The Catholic Church regards this holiday as representing one of the most significant events in human history. In Slovakia, the festival is normally marked by Holy Masses celebrated throughout the country. 6th January started Christmas time for adherents to the Eastern Orthodox Church, or Pravoslavni, also in Slovakia. According to the census conducted in 2011, there are 0.9% members of the Eastern Orthodox church living in the country. The pilgrimage of the three kings, by tradition called Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, their arrival in Bethlehem, and the presentation of gifts are a traditional part of Nativity scenes and plays.
