Prime Minister Eduard Heger welcomes the European Commission's (EC) proposal to classify nuclear energy as a sustainable energy source. Heger sees this as the culmination of more than a year of efforts together with French President Emmanuel Macron and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The Slovak premier stated that it is crucial for Slovakia that nuclear energy does not remain at an investment disadvantage. According to him, the commission "acknowledged that to achieve the goal of climate neutrality the energy mix of individual member states must be taken into account as they have different starting positions".
Slovakia supports the European goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. "However, it will not be possible without nuclear energy. It is stable (unlike most renewable sources) and low-emission, and therefore it is important in the transition to a green economy," said the Government Office. Slovakia produces more than half of its electricity from nuclear power, which puts it in second place in the EU. "After the completion of the third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant, it will be more than 70%," they added.
