The first results of this year's census have shown that Slovakia currently has 5,449,270 inhabitants. Of the total population, 49% are men and 51% are women. General Director of the Social Statistics and Demography Section of the Statistical Office Ľudmila Ivančíková said that the results of the census confirmed the trend of an aging population. The share of the population of pre-productive age (0-14 years) is 16%, of productive age (15-64) 67% and the share of the population of post-productive age (65+) is 17%. "Compared to 2011, the share of the population over the age of 65 has increased significantly. We see it in all regions, the number of them has increased the most in the Trenčín region," Ivančíková specified.
As many as 98.9% of permanent residents have Slovak citizenship. The first results also show that slightly more people live in cities (53.2%) than in the countryside (46.8%). Most people with other nationalities live permanently in the Bratislava region, the least in the Trenčín region. Further results of the census are to be published at the beginning of the next year.
