The State Citizenship Act, which stipulates that a person, who acquires the citizenship of another country, automatically loses their Slovak citizenship, has deprived 830 people of their Slovak citizenship since it was introduced in July 2010.
According to Interior Ministry's statistics, most of these people were those who acquired the Czech citizenship (820), followed by those who gained the citizenship of Germany (168), Austria (117), United Kingdom (71) and Hungary (53). The Slovak Interior Ministry recently announced that it is preparing a mitigation of the current legislation. If a person with their permanent residence in a foreign country acquires the citizenship of the country, they won't lose their Slovak citizenship. Meanwhile, permanent residents of Slovakia who gain a foreign citizenship will automatically lose the Slovak one.
