Police detained opposition Smer-SD leader before protest

The police detained head of the opposition Smer-SD party Robert Fico on Thursday before the start of a protest announced by the party in Bratislava. Following his release from a police station, Fico said that he had been charged with the crime of incitement. "The only purpose of this ridiculous intervention was to prevent me from taking part in a car protest," stated Fico. Public gatherings are banned during the state of emergency, which has been in place in Slovakia since the end of November. For this reason, the police detained health rescuers who came to protest in front of Parliament this week. They were later released.
