The European Union is in favour of dialogue with Russia, but at the same time it must make it clear that any military action against Ukraine is unacceptable and would have far-reaching consequences for EU-Russia relations. The head of Slovak diplomacy, Ivan Korčok, said this during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday 13 December. At the meeting, the ministers appealed above all for a de-escalation of tensions and for transparency on the Russian side. The Union's chiefs of diplomacies also addressed the situation in Belarus, where the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko is continuing its domestic repression and creating migratory pressure on the EU's external border.
