The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in November sold the Slovak Embassy's original building in Washington, which has stood empty since 2018. According to the contract published in the Central Registry of Contracts, the ministry sold the building for almost €1.9 million. The sale of the original building and the purchase of a new one was approved by the Slovak Government in November 2017. The ministry bought the new building in Washington DC in May 2018. It's in a location in which the embassies of several other EU and non-EU countries are based. The reason for the change in buildings was the unsuitability of the old premises, which the embassy had been pointing to for a long time. The original building was located outside the city of Washington, in McLean in the state of Virginia. As Foreign Ministry spokesperson Juraj Tomaga informed, its technical condition meant that it required extensive reconstruction. According to available data, Slovakia was the only EU-member state whose embassy was located outside the US capital.
