Outgoing President Ivan Gašparovič on Thursday appointed 11 judges, who are therefore quite possibly the last judges to have been appointed by Gašparovič during his two terms.
Gašparovič said in his speech to the newly-appointed judges that they've just entered into one of the most important posts in the country as they will now decide on the lives of people, the functioning of companies and on the role of the state in maintaining law and order. “I'm sure you realise that you'll be under the scrutiny of the public as a whole, and your decisions will determine how far ahead we've moved to the compliance with democratic principles. I'm sure you're the new generation that is well aware of that,” said the president. Gašparovič’s schedule for Friday contains no more appointment ceremonies, with the president concluding his term on Sunday at noon, whereupon president-elect Andrej Kiska will take over.
