Maroš Šefčovič is Slovakia's official candidate for member of the new European Commission (EC) for the period 2014-2019. The Government approved his candidacy on Wednesday. The current EC administration will end its term in November of this year.
Šefčovič has become a very well-known name in Brussels over the 10 years of Slovakia’s membership in the European Union. From 2004 to 2009 he led the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the EU, and then in 2009 he took the post of European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism. Since 2010, Šefčovič has served as Vice-President of the European Commission. The portfolios of the future commissioners will be decided by the next EC president.
