A commemorative event marking the upcoming 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Dubcek took place at the Memorial in front of the building of Parliament on Thursday. Head of Slovak diplomacy Ivan Korcok (an SaS nominee) stated on this occasion that contemporary politics lack the values and human qualities that were promoted by the late 1968 Prague Spring communist reform movement leader. According to Korcok, promoting faith, hope and social justice, for instance, in politics is considered a sign of weakness nowadays. "But what is rarely ever mentioned are his qualities as a man who spread hope, represented humanism and did a great deal of work for the area of human rights even during the era of Normalisation. The politics of the present lack these qualities,” stated Korcok. The commemorative event was also attended by former Austrian president Heinz Fischer, head of the Czech Constitutional Court Pavel Rychetsky, as well as several Slovak MPs and ex-MEP Boris Zala.
