The Interior Ministry wants to procure new weapons for police officers by the end of this year. It plans to buy about 25,000 firearms of a single calibre, which should reduce costs.
This should also resolve the issue of incompatibility that has arisen when new guns are bought for the police. Most officers currently have guns using 9 mm Makarov cartridges, which were introduced in the police in 1992. The Interior Ministry wants to gradually replace them with 9 mm Luger. A tender for ammunition for approximately €3.5 million is also in the preparation phase.
