Former police chief Tibor Gaspar, who had been held in custody for almost a year, was released on Thursday. The Supreme Court affirmed the decision by the Specialised Criminal Court not to extend his custody. The police ex-chief and other former senior police functionaries were arrested by the National Criminal Agency (NAKA) last year in an anti-corruption bust nicknamed Purgatory. They were held in custody due to concerns that they might attempt to influence witnesses and continue potential criminal activities. Tibor Gaspar was the Police Chief at the time of the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova.
