On Sunday, a rivalry match in the highest Slovak football league between home team FC Spartak Trnava and away side ŠK Slovan Bratislava, second and first in the table, respectively, was suspended. The game stopped after approximately 15 minutes of goalless play when hundreds of fans of both teams invaded the pitch and engaged in a number of violent skirmishes.
Although the stadium staff finally managed to chase the hooligans off the pitch, the situation calmed down only once riot police had cleared the sector holding the away fans, who continued to hurl flares onto the pitch despite calls from the police and the announcer. Meanwhile, paramedics also had their hands busy, as several people suffered injuries. The match was finally suspended by the referee at the time when the first half would have ended under normal circumstances. The police then escorted the Slovan fans to Trnava railway station and made sure that they boarded a train back to the capital.
