The Rector of Comenius University in Bratislava Marek Stevcek decorated the American theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Kip S. Thorn with the Great Gold Medal on Wednesday over his decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves. Stevcek thanked the theoretical physicist not only for his scientific contributions but also for popularising science. After receiving the award, Professor Thorn delivered a lecture titled 'My Deep Relationship with the Curved Universe: From Black and Worm Holes to Time Travel and Gravitational Waves', broadcast live via a video conference to the lecture halls of other Slovak universities and also streamed live online. Thorn is an expert on gravitational physics and astrophysics. He received his Nobel Prize for the first direct detection and observation of gravitational waves in 2017.
