Hungarian Government abandoned its plan to establish a fund which would allow the purchase of agricultural land in central Europe, wrote the SME daily citing the Slovak Foreign Ministry. Last week, Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korčok expressed his disagreement with this idea at a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó. Korčok criticized the fact that Hungary did not sufficiently inform the Slovak side about his steps.
The Head of Slovak diplomacy said that the Republic of Hungary had decided to repeal the resolution on the purchase of land in neighbouring countries on the initiative of the Slovak party. Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán reportedly had sent a letter to the Slovak PM Eduard Heger. Korčok welcomed this step stating that it clears up relationships between the countries.
The Slovak opposition wanted to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session on the fund and the purchase of land in Slovakia, while the Ministry of Agriculture is deciding whether the law on the acquisition of property could be changed.
According to the SME daily, Hungary itself has strict laws that complicate the purchase of agricultural land for foreign entities.
