Miners finish operations in oldest coal mine in country

Mining company Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza has officially finished its 112-year-long coal mine operations in the town of Handlova (Trencin region), which was the oldest coal mine in Slovakia. This will result in 237 redundancies. According to the mining company's spokeswoman Adriana Sivakova, the decision to terminate the mining is in line with the schedule for shutting down individual mining fields in the Handlova and Novaky I mining areas, which was approved by the European Commission in 2019. Sivakova claimed that of the 383 employees who mined coal in the Handlova mine, 95 have been transferred to other mining operations in the meantime.
