Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) reported on Monday that the coalition has agreed that the Police Corps president should be chosen personally by the interior minister and the hearing by the parliamentary defense and security committee should be only of a consultative nature in the future.
According to the current law, the Police Corps president is appointed by the interior minister based on a selection procedure managed by a committee and following a hearing before the parliamentary defence and security committee, which must approve the candidate. The police chief is elected for a four-year term with a maximum of two terms.
The current method of choosing Police Corps presidents, which was introduced by previous interior minister Denisa Sakova, has been criticised by a number of coalition MPs.
