Run for Life starts this weekend

Entrants for the 2014 Run for Life are preparing to play their part in the fight against childhood obesity, with the fun-run starting this Saturday at June 7 at Svätopluk Square in Nitra. The proceeds from this seventh annual run will be used for the education and prevention of obesity.

“Up to 12 percent of school-age children are obese and these numbers are accelerating. All funds collected will go to raising awareness and for the prevention of children and young people from obesity and its related health problems. Experts will also be working directly with parents”, said trustee Michal Dyttert from Tesco. The education of young people against childhood obesity needs to start at an early school age say experts, warning that problems with high cholesterol levels in children are increasing. “About half of the children aged 11-12 years in Slovakia have higher cholesterol levels than what’s recommended for children”, said Gabriel Kamenský, administrator for the Slovak Heart Foundation. Last year 1,960 people attended the 4.2 kilometre run in Nitra, raising €7,285.
