Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok (an SaS nominee) on Monday took part in an informal meeting of EU heads of diplomacy, focused on the situation in Afghanistan. The debate took place on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. "The main task of the EU and the entire international community, headed by the UN, is to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan, where almost half of the population is suffering from a lack of basic food. We expect the Taliban to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable groups of people," said Korcok.
In addition to humanitarian aid, the ministers addressed the need to respect human rights in Afghanistan. Korcok stated in this regard that the EU will assess the Taliban's moves in these terms based on its actions, not its announcements.
According to Korcok, the EU considers it crucial to address the consequences of the situation in Afghanistan in cooperation and in a coordinated manner with regional partners, as the destabilisation of the country can be prevented only via joint efforts.
