Following a session of the country's Security Council on Thursday, Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) announced the formation of an expert working group. This body is intended to deal with restoring confidence in the rule of law. It will be sitting continuously as of Monday (September 20). The group will prepare proposals for changes for the Government and Parliament to improve the functioning of the security forces. "The changes will focus on professionalism, integrity, the responsibilities of individual actors and the revision of the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code. To put it simply, we must expel the mafia from the law enforcement bodies," said the premier. The group will include representatives of the courts, the prosecutor's office, ministries and other institutions under the statute of the Security Council. The Prime Minister also called on honest prosecutors, police and judges to be active in defending the law and not to be intimidated. Interior Minister Roman Mikulec (OLaNO) still enjoys his trust.
Several members of the security forces in the country have been detained in the past few months, most recently on Monday, when four National Crime Agency (NAKA) officers and the interim head of the Internal Affairs Inspectorate were arrested and charged with misusing their powers and obstructing justice. The inspectorate head as well as four NAKA officers have been remanded in custody in the meantime. A number of politicians have spoken about a war within the police in this regard.
